Job Summary
Curro Holdings is seeking to appoint a head of academics who is passionate about learner-centred learning and committed to academic excellence at Curro DigiED Victory Park in Johannesburg. The head of academics is responsible for managing academic and teaching standards across the school through the effective application of Curro policies and procedures as adapted and customised to the needs of the school. The head of academics is also responsible for the active teaching, knowledge transfer, skills development and growth of positive attitudes among learners through integrated and focused teaching approaches and mentoring teachers. In addition, the role involves teaching and coordinating specific subjects as per the Curro/CAPS/SAGS (IEB) curricula.
Job Description
- Perform teaching duties, including planning lessons, setting up workbooks, identifying/addressing learner needs and evaluating and improving instructional methods and educational materials
- Manage school administration, including timetables, staff duties, tutoring classes, subject changes and choices, communication, new applicants and learner accommodation
- Manage academics, including the planning, design and implementation of the curriculum
- Manage and mentor staff, including interviews, appraisals, mediation and training
- Manage academic policies and procedures as well as academic interventions
- Plan and manage events and award ceremonies
- Plan and manage classrooms, including assessment rosters, classroom design and set-up for optimal performance, disciplinary rules and communication with learners and parents
- Plan and manage assessments (formal and continuous) and homework, including moderation, revision and supervision
- Provide one-on-one tutoring support and extra lessons
Key Skills / Requirements
- BEd, BA or BSc degree and/or PGCE, with an honours degree in curriculum studies or educational leadership and management advantageous
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a departmental or deputy head, with experience in FET phase management, curriculum design, teaching and educational leadership advantageous
- Knowledge of the IEB curriculum
- Proven management and leadership skills
- Ability to lead and mentor other teachers and to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders
- Excellent communication, organisational and planning skills
- Willing and able to work overtime and weekends
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- SACE-registered
- Clear criminal record
